So I keep seeing this commercial for Frosted Mini Wheats, where they are telling me to "try them hot". I had never even considered such a concept before, but after seeing the ad so many times, it became quite the intriguing prospect.
Now I have always been a fan of the mini-wheats cereals, in all their incarnations. I am not a milk drinker, therefore I use very little in my cereals, especially in a cereal such FMW (as I will be referring to them from now on. Get used to it.) This is the type of cereal that tends to get very soggy very fast, and once it does so, it is rather unappealing. So my only course of action is to either use a very small amount of milk, or use a regular amount and inhale it quickly.
While I'm on the subject, why do these cereal manufacturers insist on making cereal that is quickly prone to sogginess? Some cereals can sit in milk for 5 minutes without getting soggy, but some become soggy the instant they interact with milk. Do they think I love the taste of milk so much that I want every pore and every crack of my breakfast food to be infused with milk? They make these little morsels of food far too receptive to milk, if you ask me. Yes I understand it is meant to be eaten with milk, but shouldn't you want at least a bit of separation between the dryness of the cereal and the milk itself? Do people actually enjoy eating soggy, mushy clumps of grain? But I digress.
Anyway the weather has been quite cool lately. After having this commercial rammed down my throat on an almost daily basis, I finally thought to give it a try on a cool morning. There's a note on the power of suggestion. We wonder why they show some of these commercials so much; it's to wear you down and tire out your ability to refuse. I imagine it is akin to an exchange such as this:
Guy: Here, try these dried plums.
Girl: No thank you.
Guy: Come on, try them.
Girl: No I don't want to.
Guy: They're really good. You'll like them.
Girl: No I won't.
Guy: Yes you will. Just try them.
Girl: I don't think they're my taste.
Guy: Never know unless you try them. Come on.
Girl: I don't think I should.
Guy: Hey everyone loves a dried plum. Have some.
Girl: Well...
Guy: You know you want to.
Girl: But I...
Guy: Dried plums are both healthy and delicious. You won't regret it.
Girl: Ok give 'em here. I shall try the dried plums.
I made a mental note to try FMW hot at some point. I eventually found myself in the grocery store, and as I passed by the cereal aisle, I remembered my intention to conduct this experiment. So I picked up a box of FMW, and a carton of Parmalat 1% milk. I choose to buy Parmalat because as I said before I am not a milk drinker, so milk tends to sit around my place longer than it probably should; and the carton helps to keep it fresher longer. I brought them home along with a few other things, and thought to try it the following morning.
That next morning I awoke and immediately remembered that I was supposed to try the FMW hot. I stepped out of my bedroom and noticed that it was not as cool as previous mornings had been, but decided to go ahead with it anyway. So yada yada yada I end up with a bowl of hot milk and FMW. It smells good, quite appetizing as a matter of fact; and I am conscious of the fact that I need to eat it quickly, both to take advantage of the warmness of the milk and to avoid the aforementioned sogginess.
I have Seinfeld on the TV. It isn't on broadcast television so early in the morning, so I am watching one of my DVD's. The Seinfeld DVD collection by the way is one of the most impressive things I have ever come across. That may seem a strange thing to say about a collection of episodes of a sitcom, but you must appreciate the work and effort that is put into all the extras on the set. The episodes themselves are only a small part of what makes the collection so impressive and unique. For me, there is never a bad time to watch Seinfeld; it's a guaranteed pick-me-up.
So Seinfeld is on, and I have my bowl of FMW hot. I take a spoonful and place it in my mouth. Now, even though I only just placed the milk in the bowl 45 seconds ago, already the cereal is nothing but clumps of mush. And now to make things worse, it is warm mush. Usually when there is a comparison, warm beats out cold, but in the case of milky grainy mush, I think the opposite is true. Needless to say I am very disappointed, not least of all because I am in fact quite hungry and I know I am not going to be able to finish this bowl. I try to stick it out, forcing myself to keep eating this bowl of mush, but can't get more than halfway through before I am forced to resign.
So now I am thinking I have a carton of milk and a bowl of cereal that I am really not interested in having. I hadn't eaten a bowl of cereal in months, because I had gotten off it. I found it to be a waste of money as I would inevitably be hungry 2 hours after eating cereal, and that same affect can be achieved by eating a bagel and saving a few bucks. Now in the interest of not being wasteful, I am going to have to eat the rest of this cereal and use up the milk, because I have no other use for the milk unless I go and buy more milk accoutrement.
At least I can still watch Seinfeld.
